So there is an 11 year old girl here named Ruby. She previously lived at Rosarito, but she had so many behavior problems (including beating up the younger girls), so they moved her to Soler, figuring (correctly) that she couldn’t do too much damage to girls who are all bigger than her. For the first month she lived here, she was grounded and not allowed to come downstairs and play in the courtyard, so she just stood outside our door and watched us, like we were her reality tv show. She is the reason we make sure to lock our doors, as she has sticky fingers. She has been taken to the psychologist/hospital several times for incidents of anger/aggression/etc.
However, gradually, she has been changing. Aliya and Kiersen have both made a point of trying to play with her when the other kids do not want to. When we throw birthday parties, Ruby is our best helper with the decorating. The staff has patiently cared for her, we have helped to love on her, and a difference is starting to show. She is generally more cooperative, more helpful, calmer, and nicer. There is less yelling, kicking, screaming and more smiles, giggles and playing.
Today, she showed us that in addition to the changes in her external behavior, there are deeper changes internally, in her heart.
Another one of the kids here was in trouble, and there was a serious discussion going on as to whether he should stay or go. Ruby came over to encourage him to stay and follow the rules. She was kind and gentle and encouraging. It was awesome to see her love and compassion coming out! (The boy in trouble is repentant and going to try again.)
There is a verse that says, “He who has been forgiven much, loves much.” That is true of Ruby! This place is a place of love and forgiveness for her, and she is learning to share that with others. Praise God!
