One day this week, I sat with a girl who recently moved from another orphanage. At that orphanage, she had a lot of sponsors. She showed me EVERY picture her sponsors had ever sent her… she knew their names and the names of the their children. It was clear to me that her sponsors, some of whom she had met in person, and some she only knew through pictures, had made a difference in her life.
After some discussion with the staff here, we have changed the way the child sponsorship is set up. The sponsorship money is important, as it helps provide for the basic needs of the kids. But the relationship through letters, emails, photos, is also very important. So the change is that you no longer have to commit to $50/month to sponsor a child. You can send $10 a month if that is all your budget allows… or whatever amount you can do. Our goal is to get every child fully sponsored, so if that takes 10 per kid instead of 4, that is ok.
Anyway, just sharing that change. We are hoping this will allow more people to sponsor, and more kids to have sponsors to encourage and cheerlead them from that side!
