Yesterday was an interesting day. An American doctor that we met on our last visit here wanted to come down and see some of the girls, so I was her hostess for the day. She came first to Soler, and examined one of the girls here. She was concerned about a mass that she found during the exam, and asked Martha if we could take the girl to get an ultrasound to get it checked out. Martha said sure, but she wasn’t sure where we should go. So the adventure began. We just started stopping at anything that had the word “medical” in it and asking for directions. As they went in to ask for directions in Spanish (because they both speak Spanish), I sat in the car and prayed (in English, because I don’t!).
(The nice policeman who gave us some directions, although we couldn’t really follow them.)
We got directions, got lost, stopped and asked a policeman, got more directions, stopped at another hospital, got more directions… and eventually found a very nice, clean place for the ultrasound. There was an hour wait, so we went to get lunch, and came back, had a very professional test done, and the cost was $36! And even better than the cost, the test determined there was no mass and all the tissue looked normal. Hurray! God answered the prayer for it to be ok! The girl was greatly relieved, as were we all!
Later, we loaded up the car full of kids to take out to Rosarito (because there is always someone who needs a ride to or from there) and the doctor was able to spend some time with the girls out there, teaching about healthy habits, answering random questions, and just encouraging them to take good care of themselves.
We passed this beautiful sunset, a great end to a great day. It was a good example of how one person taking just one day to share her talent/expertise made a difference in the lives of others. It is easy to be overwhelmed in life with too many choices/needs around us… and then we don’t do anything because it seems like there is too much and that whatever we do will not make a difference. But one step, one day, one task, one encouraging comment, one prayer, one something … gives God a chance to use us, just as he used that doctor yesterday to help the girls here!
amen.
